THE TRAIN SERVICE
UPPER HUTT-WELLINGTON
NO .INCREASE |N SPEED
A long letter replying to, requests made by a deputation from tho district was received at the meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council last evening from the General Manager of Hailways, (Mr. G. H. Mackley). The general tone ; of the letter was that the requests could not/be met.
It was "regretted, said Mr. Mackley, that no acceleration qould be made on the present running from Upper Hutt to Wellington. He could not agree to tile, suggestion that the 8.30 a.m. bus from the " Brown Owl"--should act as a feeder service for the 8.39 a.m. train from Upper Hutt,. as it was not practicable for the service to make the connection. It was also found that the majority of passengers from north of Upper Hutt were through passengers to Wellington, and it was not considered that any desirability existed for the connection with the train at Upper Hutt. The provision of a feeder service f rdm Haywards to Lower Hutt"via the Western.Hutt Road was impracticable. It was not considered,that sufficient traffic would bo offering to warrant the extension of the "Brown Owl" service to Akatarawa Bridge and Plateau Road. The licences for the Hutt Valley services would expire on February 2S, and would be under review at an early date, when the question of providing ah improved service to the "Brown Owl" would be given consideration. With reference to the departure of the 12.45 p.m. bus in close proximity: to tho 12.48 train, it was stated that the bus was run essentially to .cater for intermediate passengers who reside distant from the railway. It was' decided .that no additional facilities were necessary in the way of extra lighting at Wallaceville. * ;
, A councillor expressed > disappointment that no reference'was made to reduced fares for workers. ■ ''-■'..
Councillor W. Fortune said that Mr Mackley had practically stated that no reduction was possible in that direction. ;■ ■•■■•.-■
It was decided that a small deputation should wait on Mr.- Mackley to discuss certain aspects of the service.
