GROCERY FIRM FINED
A fine of £1 was imposed; jupon FullerLipton, Ltd., grocers, in. the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon for employing assistants for more than 48 hours a week. On a claim by the Inspector of Awards for a penalty of £10 for an alleged breach of the Grocers' Assistants' Award by employing assistants for more than 15 minutes after closing time, Mr. E. Page, S.M., imposed no penalty, as the circumstances were the same, as those disclosed in; the information. >-I '.' \ ,; , ;'•■-:
The inspectdt said the firm had been warned by the Department several times regarding keeping assistants after hours. There was keen competition in the grocery trade throughout Wellington, and no concessions could be allowed by the Department. The information and the claim had been laid in r'esped; of a halfholiday on ryvhich, assistants should not be worked later than 12.45 p.m. Some had been found working for the defendant at 1 p.m. - •
"It is not a serious case;" said Mr. G. I. Joseph. The (assistants had been engaged lie said, in taking perishable goods from the counters to the cold store for the weekend.
