THE WEEK'S BUSINESS GILT-EDGEDS POPULAR E\euing Post," Febiuary 24. The stock and share market has been fairly active this week. There has been a particularly brisk demand for gilt-edgeds. Inquiries for Government .stock were numerous, but holders showed no gre.it desire to part with their securities, their being no "sellers" quotations on three days. Business reported during the week was as- follows:— 3,3 p.c. stock (1939-43), £102; 3% p.c. stock (1938-52), £101 12a 6d; 4 p.c. sto.-k (1010); £101 12s Gd, and bonds, £102; 4 ■p.c. stock (1945), £101 ss, £101 7s 6d, and bonds, £101 10s; 4 p.c. stock (1940), £102 10s; 4 p.c. stock (19j3),! £102, £101 17s 0d... ( . There was some demand for local body and company' debentures, but again the desire-to unload was'not great. Welling-ton-City &Vz per cents. (1943) were sought at £101 10s, but theie were no sellers at that figure. .Eastbourne Borough 4Vi per cents. , (1932) wcie offered for sale at £98,' but the market did not respond, l'heie weie buyers of Wellington Gas Company debentures at £103 10*, £10,3 7s fld, and £103 ss, but there were no sellers. Wellington facing Club debentures were i» demand at'£9B 10s and one sale took place at £09. There was an inquiiy for Kolbiirn Tramway debentmes at £102 10s, no "Hellers. Bujerswjeie offciing £33 17s 6d, a considerable advance on the previous ivcek. Bank of Australasia were- in demand at £13 2s Gd, sellers quoting £13 7s 6d in the early part of .the week and £13 Bs. 6d later on. Union of Australia ■were in good demand, and a number of sales were recorded. Bank of New* Zealand (D. Long Tetin) were in demand at 32s 3d. Insurance shaies generally were quiet. Queensland Insuiance weie inquired for at £3 5s and £3 4s 6d, but sellers quoted £3 8s and no sales were reported. The ■week's business was as follows: — Aust Prov. Assurance, llsj National, ISs Sd, 18s 7d; New Zealand, 57s 9d, 58s, »Ts 3d, 50s 6d; South British, 755, 74s Gd; Standard, 625, 02s 6d, 61s 9d. In the financial section, New Zealand Loan and Mercantile were offered for sale at £63, but there were no quotations from buyers. Wellington. Investment T. and A. were quoted by selleis at 8s Gd, but there were no buyers. Sales took place as follows: — Abraham and Williams (prof.), 80s; Dalgety and Co., £10 8s; Farmers' Auctioneering (A pref.), 20s, and (B pref.), 19s; Goldsbrougb.' Mo'rt, 33s 3d, 32s lid, 335; New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, 3s 9d, 3s lid, 3s lOd, 4s; Traders' Finance (7s 6d paid), 2s 3d; United Building Society, 19s lOd, 19s lid; Wiight, Stephensbn (pief.), ISs l%d, ISs. _ „ industrials;and others. Coalmine shares were in fair demand during the week, and some sales took .place. .Renown were sought after at Is, but there we.ie no sellers, Kaitangata (16s paid) were to be had at £1 2s, but no Bales took place at that figure. The following business was done during the week: — Pukemiro Collieries, 225; Westport, ss; Westport-Stockton (pref.), 3s 6d. Wellington Gas (brdi) were offered for sale at, £1 17s 10d, buyers quoting;' £1 16s 9d. No sales took place. Feilding Gas were ./to be had at 4s 6d, but the most buyers were offering.was 2s Gd. i The only Auckland Gas, 24s 3d, 24s'6d. sales of,the week were: — Meat shares were again in good demand. There were buyers for Gear Meat at £1 6a 9d and £1 7s; ■but' holders were asking £1 7s fld and £1 7s 6d, and no sales were recorded. The sales were:— Canterbury Frozen Meat (pref.), £5 8s; Southland Meat.(cum div.), 60s 3d, 70s; New ' Zealand Refrigerating (£1), 18s 10d,.and (10s), 8s 7d, 8s 6d, 8s sd, 8s 8d,.8s Od, Bs;7d, 8s sd, &s Cd. ■BREWERIES AND GENERAL. There were inquiries- for Carltbn Breweries at £2 4s and -£2 4s. Od,'but holders were not-prepared to sell at that figure and • ihero . were.no .quotations. Toohey's could, be had at £1 Bs, but there were no offera. The'sales of the week were:— New Zealand Breweries (cum div.), 405," 3Da od, 39s Gd, 39s 7d, 39s Gd; Staples, 27s 3d, 275; Tooth's Brewery, 44s 3d, 44s od, 445, 44s Id. There was little'l doing in timber shares, and what demand there was was not met by holders. Taringamutu Totara were in demand'afc 4s 6d, but holders were asking 3s above that figure. There were'inquiries for Kauri at 17s, but holders w:anted 18s! The only Bale of the week was:— Taupo Totara Timber, 3s. Woollen shares were not actively sought. Mosgiel were to be. had. at £10 2s Gel and •'£lo ss, but there were no quotations from buyers. The only sales were:— ' Kaiapoi Woollen (17s), 0s Od, 9s 7%d; . Mosgiel Woollen, £10. Union Steam were in demand at £1 4s and P. and 0. deferred stock at £1 2s. The sales were:— Howard Smith, 15s 8d; Union Steam (pref.), 25s 6d. MISCELLANEOUS.
