TWO BIC PICNICS

Two big picnics were held today, the Wellington transport workers at Newtown Park and the Wellington Harbour Board's annual staff gathering at Karori Park. At both grounds there is a large attendance. Hundreds of children were present at Newtown Park, the programme catering for them specially. There were races for children under ten years of age and'fr'ftm ten years to fifteen, and also races and competitions for adults. Another attraction was the Highland dancing.

The Port Nicholson Band was in attendance at the Harbour Board picnic, for which arrangements were made for special buses and trams to run to the ground. This afternoon the chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr. CM. 'i'urrell, was to present the prizes for the adults' races. The wharves, and the Harbour Board's stores, offices, and bonded warehouse were closed for ordinary business, and. those who desired a'carrier today'found that it was not an easy matter to 'obtain/one.-Services were considerably restricted. "There is a certain amount of work that cannot be stopped," stated the principal of ;one carrying-company, "and for this we have had, to keep some men on and pay'them special rates. There's tons of stuff lying about, but owing to the picnic there are not the men available to move it."
