ELLSWORTH'S SHIP

SAFE IN BAY OF WHALES

CONDITIONS AT LITTLE

AMERICA

v According. to wireless' advice received by the. Bear, of- Oakland, tho Lincoln. Ellsworth Antarctic expedition's ship Wyatt Earp, which , left Duhedin early in December, has arrived safely, at tho Bay of Whales, in the ice barrier. Last week tho Wyatt Earp reported that she ■ had been held fast in the ico since she entered it on December 15, the pack then being unusually heavy^ The radio message received yesterday on the Bear indicated that the Wyatt Earp had arrived "all well" at the barrier and had found everything intact at Little- America, the base established there by Admiral Byrd on his first expedition. The huts are:reported to be buried under some 18ft of snow, the accumulation since Byrd and his party left the barrier in February, 1930.

The Wyatt Earp entered the pack-ice on December 15, ten days out from Duuedin, in latitude 63deg 17min south, and longitude 174deg east, which indicated that the pack was further north than in normal years'. For nearly three weeks tho ship was in extremely heavy ice, with few "leads" showing. Owing to her experiences in tho pack the Wyatt Earp had some trouble with tho wireless apparatus. This is the reason why so few. Press messages have been coming through recently, for a number of tubes in tho transmitter have suffered-from, the bumping received by tho ship. .'■
