SHEFFIELD SHIELD

N.S.W. V. SOUTH AUSTRALIA

SYDNEY, January 0

• New South Wales defeated. South Australia in their return Sheffield Shield match by nine ' wickets'. The scores were:—South Australia 246 and 177; Now South Wales 273 and 154 for one wicket" (Fingleton; 58 not out, Brown 83,-Wendell Bill 10 not out, Waite taking one for 53). .

A. A. Mailey, writing in, tho "Sun," says that Brown's fine form entitles him to serious consideration for the Test team. His runs were made in a dashing, confident manner against Wall and Grimmett, two leading bowlers. H© lost his wicket today trying to hit Waite out of the ground' when the match' was almost won and was stumped.

By their outright win ;New South Wales havo improved their prospects of retaining possession of the Sheffield Shield. They have another match with Victoria1, and this they have to win to finish up in first place on the Shield table.

There is nothing "new in the report that W. A. Brown is entitled to serious consideration, for the Australian Tost team. This player has been recognised all along as a candidate. As a State representative last geason he was associated with Bowc in one notable partnership against the M.C.O. team, the two. colts (they are 20 years of age) ih one innings for. New South Wales making 139 runs of a total of 180. Brown has been shaping very well throughout the present season, 'and made an excellent start inthe Sheffield Shield scries with a century against Queensland.'He is an opening bat and an excellent field. His chances of inclusion in' Australia's team for England are affected to some extent by th'o multiplicity of candidates, holding similar positions on the batting list. But if Brown misses the trip to England he should be a certainty for the trip to Now Zealand.—"Not Out."
