Tho shark victim was Colin Grant, aged 22, a former surf and belt champion. He swam ashore unaided though the calf' of his leg'had been torn away. The leg was amputated below ; the knee. Hundreds of rescues were'made by tho patrols in the rough surf which was running on all tho beaches. A number of bathers wero injured when carried against tho rocks at tho end of the beaches. '. ■
