' Mr. H. Moskowitz, of N«w York, representative of tho Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Picture Corporation, arrived by the Makura today. Ho is. a through passenger to Sydney. ~ ! Mr. J. S. Iliddleston, of Wellington, accompanied by Mrs. Iliddleston and Miss V., Iliddlcaton, returned by the Sjtakura from a business trip to ' EngIjmd. Ho has been away for about five nbonths. ' ! Mr. J. Rowntrec, England, who is connected with, the firm" of chocolate manufacturers, accompanied by Mrs. Bowntree, was a passenger by the Makura. After spending about a fortriight in New Zealand, Mr. Rowntrce is going on to Melbourne on business. ', A former Auckland Customs officer, Mr. James Lockie, died on Saturday, at the age of 80 years, states an Auckland Press Association message. Ho was in the Customs Department from' 1881 •till 1919. Ho was a prominent Freemason and Presbytorian. ;, Ono of the passengers on tho motorship Wanganolla, which arrived- at Auckland from Sydney on Saturday was Mr. Clark McConachy, the professional billiards player.

Duncdin, has been appointed1 by tho ' conference of the New Zealand Presbyterian: Young Men's Bible Class Union to the position of travelling secretary.
| Mr. W. E. Bush, "of Brisbaiic, formerly Auckland city engineer, .accompanied by Mrs. Bush, returned' to Auckland on Friday evening after visiting Napier and Kotorua. They will spend a brief time in Auckland- before returning to Brisbane.
| Captain Davies, marine superintendent in Australia and New Zealand for Messrs. Andrew Weir and Co., London, accompanied by Mrs. Davies, was a passenger by tho Makura, which arrived today from San Francisco. Captain Davies, whose headquarters aro in Sydney, lias been on a'holiday trip to England.
Dr, P. E. Carrick, of Mount Eden, Auckland, has been appointed medical officer to the Tongan-Government. Dr. Carrick, who qualified in London, has 'had over thirty years' experience asl, a district medical- officer in India, and retired from the service in 1932 with, the rank of major. Ho will Jeave by the Monterey for Suva on January 13. Tho appointment is for three years.
.Mr. F. B. Stephens, lecturer'in economics at Auckland University College, left by tho Wanganella for Sydney, en route to London. Last May ho was awarded a travelling fellowship for study in problomsof municipal administration, and he is going to take a course at tho London School of Economics under Dr. Finer. The fellowship is tenable for one year,' with the possibility of extension. Mr. Stephens intends to do' personal research in Britain and in European countries, particularly Germany, and will-probably spend a month in tho United States on his way back to New Zealand.
■Mr. H. M. Mackay, managing director -of . New ' Zealand Airways, Ltd., arrived from the south last evening and leaves for Dunediri by air today.
