BAIGENT'S BRIDGE
Some time ago when it was proposed to go on with the reconstruction of Baigent's Bridge in the Hutt Valley, the Highways Board agreed to allow a one-way traffic structure to be built. Since the plans were prepared, however, it has been foijnd that unless very'expensive approaches are constructed the arrangement will be a bad one for. traffic. At yesterday's meeting of-the. Hutt County Council the district engineer reported that he considered *it would be advisable to go in for a two-way traffic bridge. "This is estimated to cost an addditiotial £250," he said, "and the Main Highways Board' is prepared to find its Bhare of this amount. . .• .< In view of the fact that the Akatarawa jcamp will probably be.closed down before this approach work is ready, and as in that case a separate contract would have to be let for the approaches, I think it would be fast as cheap to.go in for a twoway traffic bridge." The council deferred its decision until a reply is received from the Minister of Public Works on the matter. ' * .
