TEDDY BEAR
A Teddy Bear is always a nursery favourite with the tiny toddlers, and the one illustrated hero is such a soft, cuddlesome toy, and quite simple and inexpensive to make. The success of knitted toys- really depends largely on the way they are stuffed, and to make them hard-wearing and well,shaped they must bo well stuffed with kapok. Materials: Two 2oz skeins sports wool, one pair No. ll knitting needles, 2 glass eyes, kapok for stuffing, £ yard ribbon, 2 lengths hat'wire. Black wool to mark nose, and. paws.' t The pattern is knitted in garter stitch. The head -is made in three
pieces—tho middle ' and the two side The Middle of Head.—Using No. 11 needles, cast on 2 stitches. In next and every third row increase once at each end of the needle until you have 28 stitches on your needle's. ' Three rows plain. Next and every third row, X 2 tog. at each : end of needle- .until 4 stitches remain. ' Cast off. Side Pieces (both alike).—Cast on 22 stitches, Increase once at beginning of next and every alternate row' until 30 stitches are on your needle; 2 rows plain. In next and' every alternate row X 4 tog. at each end of needle until 4 stitches remain. Cast off. The Bodyi—Cast on 8 stitches. Increase once at each end of needle every alternate row until 12 stitches on your needle. Then: First row, inc. once in first stitch, twice -in middle of row, 'and once in last stitch. Second row1,. Knit. Repeat these two rows until you have 36 stitches on your needles. Next and every third row, increase twice in middle of row until 42 stitches. Then increase twice in middle of row every 6th row until 46 stitches. Sixteen rows plain.' Next row: * X 2 tog. twice in middle of row. Knit 6 rows plain. Repoat from * once, then X 2 tog. twice in middle of row. * Knit 3 rows plain. Knit 2 tog. twice in middle of row. Repeat from * once. Next row: * X 2 tog. at beginning of needle. X 2 tog. at middle and X 2 tog. at end of needle. Knit back. Repeat from1 * twice. Then X- 2 tog. at each end of needle every alternate row until 18 stitches remain. Cast off. Make another piece in same manner. Ears.—Cast on 6 stitches, 2 -rows plain. Increase once at fcach end of needle in next and every alternate row until you have 16 stitches on your needles. Eight rows plain. Then X 2 tog. in middle of row, every row, until 6 stitches remain. Cast. off. Legs.—Cast on 28 stitches. Six rows plain. X 2 tog. at each end of needle in next and every following row, until 18 stitches remain. Two rows plain. Increase once at each end of needle in next arid every following 4th row until you have 24 stitches. Then increase every 6th row until you have 30 stitches. Six rows plain. X 2- tog. at each end of needle and twice in middle of needle, until 10 stitches remain. Cast off. Make another leg in same manner. Soles.—Cast on 6 stitches. Two rows plain. Increase once at each end of needlo in next and every alternate row until^you have 16 stitches on your noodles. Four rows plain. In next and every alternate row decrease once at each end of needle until 8 stitches remain. Cast off. .Make another sole in the same manner. Arms. —Cast on 3 stitches. Increase once in each stitch. Two rows plain. Increase once at each end of needle in next and every 3rd row until you have 12 stitches. Three rows plain. Cast on 8 stitches. Three rows plain. In next and every 6th row increase once at qach end of needlo until you have 30 stitches on your needles. Twelve rows plain. In next and every alternate row X 2 tog. at beginning, middle, and end of row until 12 stitches remain. Cast off. Pick up, 8 stitches along where 8 stitches were cast on. Knit 8 rows plain. 9th row: * X 2 tog. at each end of needle. 10th row: Knit. Repeat from * until 2 stitches remain. Cast-off. Make another foreleg in same manner. ,To Make Up Teddy, Bear.—Fluff up each piece separately with teaglei brush. Stitch sides of head to middle, from nose to bade' arid from nose to front. §ew up side scams of body, and saw head and body together. Sew up arms and legs. Place a piece of cardboard cut to shape of sole inside each foot. Stuff head and body firmly. Sew up base of body. Fold ears and sew to head; also sew «yes in place. Stuff all legs firmly, having'first sewn a looped piece of hat wire to ' sole of foot and hand. Then pass wire through ■ base of body and chest respectively, and tack to base of legs.- Stuff-well and sow up tops logs and arms. •Mark nose, mouth,, and claws with black wool. Tie ribbon, round his neck. ". ' • •
