CRICKET

NELSON COMPETITION

GOOD PERFORMANCES

(Special to the "Evening Post.") NKLSON, December 11. Thfi two outstanding features of Saturday's senior championship cricket wore D. Freeman's performance for College in taking nine wickets for 74 runs in Wakatu's second innings and 15. H. Neale's 155 not out for Old Boys against Athletic. ! Wakatu are considered a solid batting team and were expected to put up a good showing against College, but Freeman made a return to his best form, and had all the batsmen disconcerted, in bis seventh over he bowled Kinzett (who made a double century for Nelson in tho recent Hawke Cup match) and Browne (Hawke's Bay representative last year) with consecutive balls, making his average at that ■stage three wickets for 13 runs. In the last live of his 21 overs he cleaned up the four tail-end batsmen, taking tho four wickets for 10 runs, and including a repetition of two wickets with consecutive balls. He clean bowled four batsmen, liad three caught, and gained two leg before I wickets. It is a long time since a Nelson bowler took nine of the ten wickets in a championship game. Except for a little uncertainty early in his innings against McGirr's bowling, Neale batted splendidly, for his century, which occupied a little over 2% hours. He batted throughout the afternoon and Was unbeaten with 155 at the drawing .of stumps. '. On the first day of the College-Wakatu match, Wakatu batting six men only on account of the others playing in the Hawke Cup' match, were dismissed for S2. College replied with 343. On Saturday Wakatu made ISI (Kinzett 22, Browne 30. Stewart 24, Mellwraith 23, .Hurst 34), College thus winning by an innings and 74 runs. The Old Boys-Athletic match was commenced on Saturday, the former giving Athletic an afternoon in the field while they scored 361 runs for eight wickets — Xeale 155 not out, J. Newman 55, ■]•!. -E. Simpson 70. For the fifth wicket Neale and Simpson added 137 runs. R. Ralfe was the most successful bowler, with four wickets for 70 runs.
