TOURIST INTERESTS

MEETING AT HERMITAGE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TIMAEU, December 4.

Representatives 'of tourist interests, the Public Works and Railway Departments, road ; transport, and county councils assembled at The Hermitage, at the weekend. The . gathering was the outcome of a similar function last year when the South Island Tourist League was formed. ■.-.■.'.

The . party, which numbered 100, visited the Ball Hut and Tasraan Glacier and also made trips; to other points' of interest. A number of speeches were mado at the official dinner, the general tone being the need for the development of a tourist sense. Speakers emphasised that the South Island possessed attractions unequalled in the world, but that there was need for judicious advertising. They stated that the tourists at present were well catered for in the,way of transport and accommodation.

A visitor, Mr. A: F. Clayer, Trade Controller df Railways, Adelaide, paid a tribute to the. New Zealand railways, stating that they were the equal of anything in the world.
