AMATEUR ATHLETICS

TOURS BY AMERICANS

POLE VAULT RECORD VETOED

In addition to other business several matters held over on account of lack of time from the annual meeting of the association were dealt with at the monthly meeting last evening of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Council. The president, Mr. R. W. McVilly, presided. Discussion on the question, raised by a motion before the annual meeting of the association, of providing for an extension of the rule entitling competitors who represent New Zealand to a N.Z.A.2V.A. blazer, was postponed pending the possible revival of New Zealand v. Australian contests at an early date. Mr. C. G. Krogness, sen., San Francisco, who with his son has acted until recently as the association's representative in the United States, wrote stating that in conformity with a resolution passed by the Amateur Athletic Union of America there would be no need for a. .personal representative in the United States, and consequently there was no recommendation of a successor he could offer. Mr. Krogness forwarded a copy of the resolution, which is as follows: — "That from this date,- (1930) 'henceforth all invitations and negotiations for American athletes to compete outside of the United States shall be made through the respective amateur sport governing bodies of the countries concerned, and that any American athlete receiving an invitation direct from a club or individual to compete outside the United States 6hall be denied the necessary permit and approval of the Amateur Athletic Union of America." . Mr. Krogness pointed out that the American Athletic Union required an American manager selected by the union to accompany any team, empowered to conserve and protect its interests and actions. The view taken by the council was that this stipulation would impose a hardship on the score of expense, and it was decided that the matter should bo taken up with the A.A.U. An honorarium of £00 for his services during the* past year was voted to the secretary (Mr. L. A. Tracy), and a resolution expressing appreciation of liis work was recorded. A similar resolution was passed iv regard to the services of Messrs. Kvogness, sen. and jun. The Kiwi" Ladies' Amateur Athletic Club, Auckland, of which Mr.'V. Hugo (who was a member of the N.Z.A.A.A. Council prior to his transferring to Auckland) is the president, was granted affiliation. , A RESOLUTION RESCINDED. As a result of further advice to hand, indicating in the council's opinion that the rules covering the event had not been fully complied with, the resolution passed in May last recognising.B. 0. Johnson's pole vault record of llft'sV4in, established on March 4 this year, was rescinded. In a letter to the secretary Mr. L. Harwood, of Sydney, reported that Mr. Richard Coombes, a doyen of athletic officials, had been in failing health for some months and was confined to his home in Sydney. It was decided to write to Mr. Coombes expressing the council's sympathy and good wishes to him. 'A letter from a Hastings schoolmaster raised the question of whether schoolboys who competed for cash prizes infringed their amateur status. Mr. Tracy read a letter forwarded by him 111 reply, in which he pointed out there was no question that the amateur status of■■'boys who competed in professional races was affected, and that it would be necessary for them to bo reinstated. The following reinstatements were approved:—A. 11. Wilson (Oamaru)., R. T. Johnson (Poverty Bay), Miss M. O'Gorman and Miss.X. O'Gorman (Gisborue). At the suggestion erf the Otago Centre it was decided to make inquiries as to the approximate cost of securing' the services of a suitable athletic coach should it be decided to bring, one to New Zealand.
