BUT SOME COASTAL RAIN

According to tho weather forecast issued at noon today, variable winds may be expected to prevail over the South Island, with north-easterlies to northerlies predominating. South-easter-lies will prevail over tho North Island, and will, be moderate generally, although strong at times in far northern districts. Winds later, however, will bo tending northerly in direction. The weather will still be cloudy and. in places foggy along the. East Coast and in far northern districts, and in those areas scattered misty rain may be expected, but elsewhere fair to fine weather with mild temperatures is likely to continue. s

There has been a slight rise in. pressure since last night in far northern districts, but otherwise there has been littlo change in pressure distribution. Aa intense anticyclone extends across the South Island, with its centre near the Chatham Islands, while a depression is located to the north .of New Zealand. Strong south-easterly winds have' therefore persisted in and to the north of Cook Strait, but these have decreased in force sinco last night. Over the South Island winds have been less strong and more variable in direction, although a freshening north-easterly was blowing along the East Coast this morning. Scattered misty'rain has fallen in far northern districts and along the East Coast of the North Island. At 9 a.m. today it was drizzling in Christchurch. Most of tho South Island, however, and -the western districts of tho North Island have experienced fair to line weather.

Tho weather in Auckland yesterday was cloudy to overcast, a fresh easterly wind blowing all day. Wellington Js- weather was fine and pleasant yesterday morning, over seven hours of bright sunshine being recorded. During the afternoon, however, the south-easterly wind became strong and the weather dull and threatening, but no rain foil. The maximum temperature during the day was 65.9 degrees. The weather in Christchurch yesterday was mostly dull with a north-easter-ly breeze. The maximum temperature there was 62 degrees. A light drizzling rain.fell at times last night.

Dunedin had fair to cloudy weather yesterday, with a light and* variable wind.
