SUMMER ROSES

DISPLAY; AT KARORI

The roses shown at the summer show o£ the Karori Horticultural Society, held in the Parish Hall, Karori, yesterday, were o£ a quality not often seen in Wellington. The blooms were arranged on long tiered tables and presented a br/Iliant spectacle for the many visitors. Mr. W. M. Page, president of the so.ciety, introduced; i-Mr, J. M. ■A, llotc, vrho opened the show. The champion rose,.. "Lemon Pillar, shown by Mr. K. M. Porteous, was an excellent specimen, being creamy yellow in shade. Another prominent rose exhibitor was Mr. D. S. Patrick. . Mr.^Gr. L. Corkhill, -one of Wellington's best-kffown growers of violas and pansies, took practically all.of the prizes in these sections. His displays were of an . exceedingly high quality. '<'. ■ The children's sections again drew record entries and special prizes -were awarded'in many instances. In the out flower division there was a brilliant variety of roses, poppies, paeonies, and delphiniums. • ,',,'-.■■ 1 T ■A fine exhibit of rock; plants—including a unique "Tom Thumb" fuchsia, which does not grow more than nine inches high —was.showri by Mr. R. H. Johnston. Mr. W. H. Kent had a display of ..roses, .nemesiae, and pausies, the pansies being particularly good. Messrs. Duncan and Davies. New Plymouth nurserymen, showea some varieties of unusual and attractive Woonis,' and Mr. F. Westbury, of Talta, had some very sturdy and colourful sweet peas on show.
