WAIHI CAGE ACCIDENT
DAMAGES AWARDED

Nine of the thirteen men Avh'o wore injured when the cage at No. 2 shaft in which they were being lowered to work in the Waihi mine on July 26, broke away and fell more than 1000 feet, claimed in special and general damages more, than £4000 from thotWaihi Gold Mining Company in the Waihi Warden's Court yesterday.'The case was heard by Mr. P. W. Platts, S.M., warden, and five assessors. Mr. P. J. o'Began, who appeared for the plaintiffs, in the course of his address suggested to the Court that the men were entitled to consideration for nervous strain, apart from bodily.injuries. Mr. H. P. Eichmon'd, for the defendant company, admitted liability for damages, but asked the Court not to bo swayed by sentiment in assessing damages. The accident had been a spectacular one, but the Court' should not be influenced by that fact. _ ■ The assessors allocated this morning tho following amounts to the injured men, tho awards in all eases being below tho amounts claimed:—Arnold, £203 and costs £16 13s; S. Follas,'£lß3 7a (£l2 3s); Kemp,'£2sß Is (£l9 2s); Shergold, £221 12s (£l9 7s 6d); Johnson, £205 9s 6d (£l6 9s); Thornton, £183 17s (£ll 3s 6,d); F. E. Comes, '£418 16s (£25 3s tfd); H. G.
