POULTRY CONGRESS

FIFTH MEETING AT ROME

Early in September the Fifth World's ] Poultry Congress was held at Koine, Italy. These meetings are arranged by the- Poultry Science Association, and delegates. attend from almost every country interested in poultry keeping. Prom a modest beginning back in 1921 theso conferences, which are held once every three years, have proved of great benefit to all concerned. A poultry show is held in conjunction with the congress, with selected breeding trios from each country. What a pity it is that New Zealand has never sent any birds, as the publicity gained would assist out expert trade in stud poultry, apart from showing the high class of stud stock which we undoubtedly possess. The chief British organisers comprised Captain the Hon. C. K. 'Greenway, well known as one of the leading Bhode £sland Bed breeders in England; Sir Edward Brown, probably the leading figure in the poultry world of today, and the original founder of the association; Captain S. W. CHft and Messrs. Francis, Lewer, and Hedworth Foulkea. From available news it seems that some delay resulted from tho unexpected official visit of II Duec. • Quito without previous advice Mussolini expressed a desire to visit the Congress the day before the official opening. Speaking in the three languages of the Congress —English, Italian, and German, II Duce asked leading questions at all the chief stands, being escorted all the while with an official party representing the delegates. ■ ■ ■ . . . . Numerous papers, "carefully prepared by leading experts, were read at the Congress, many simultaneously under the different sections. These are printed in book form and are obtainable for a nominal sum from the Congress Secretary. Summaries are already appearing in tho poultry press. The Congress lasted over a period of seven days, and was followed by tours to interesting points in Italy. As yet it appears that no venue has been decided for the 193G congress, though it has been rumoured that South Africa has an opportunity. No doubt America will make a strong bid for the congress at an early date, as that country has supported the movement wholeheartedly since its inception, no less than 2000 visitors having crossed the Atlantic for the London Congress of 1930. " Captain Greenway reports, in a direct communication to the writer, that the Bhode Island Bed exhibits from England were easily the best at the Congress and wore snapped up at. catalogue prices_ very early in the week. The Australian trios of White Leghorns and Australorps received much praise and were sold to the Italian Government. Truly New Zealand should do her mite to support these conferences, if she is to uphold her reputation as a country producing some of the leading utility stud stock of the poultry world. At least one member of our House of Representatives should realise the value of these meetings, for tho member for Kaiapoi attended one of these congresses some six years ago.
