SPORT ON SUNDAY

USE OF PUBLIC AREAS

OBJECTION AT PALMERSTON

(Special to the "Evenino Post.") PALMEESTON n!, This Day

A large deputation representing various religious organisations pf tho city waited on the Palmerston North City Council last night and asked that the council should not give permission for organised / sports to bo conducted on public playing areas on Sundays. The speakers did not condemn the playing of sport on Sundays, but protested against organised, and competitive sport on' public areas. Several speakers said that competitive and, organised sport would ultimately result in the loss of the Sabbath to workers and the introduction of the Continental Sabbath. A member of the Sunday School Union said that the introduction of competitive sport would deal a most severe blow to the Sunday- schools of the city, which were doing excellent work in preparing future citizens. He was of opinion that tho question was one which was too great, for the council to decide, and that it should bo decided by the citizens. In answer to a question, tho president of the Council of Christian Congregations, Mr. F. T.Vasoy, said that the council had been more than satisfied with the control of the reserves in the past, until it was noticed that competitive and organised games wore creeping in. It was stated'that the Council of' Christian Congregations wished to have the present bylaw in regard to Sunday sport given effect to. After the deputation had- retired the council discussed the matter. ' Councillor G. Tremaino moved that the previous decision of tho reserves committee granting permission . for Sunday cricket should be adopted. Councillor W. B. Cameron raised a point of order that there was a bylaw at present prohibiting Sunday play on reserves, whereupon Councillor Tremaino gave notice of" motion. that tho bylaw should .be rescinded.
