PARTY'S EXCITING EXPERIENCE

An exciting experience befell a party of Suri'dalo -.residents'-/.when fire broke out on a launch in Which- they were travelling to Auckland.: In putting out the flames, Mr,- C.; Thornton, storekeeper, of Surf dale, and Mr. S. Tapper received bums. ',;■' ; / ',< . ; A fault in the carburetter pipe caused tho petroi .to.-lgnite. '• Mr. Tapper waß trapped by thp flames, but dashed through a" wall of fire and turned off the petrol. He and Mr. Thornton tlioii threw several-coats oyor the flames, and also emptied several buckets of water over the fire. They were both exhausted when the lire was extinguished. A coastal steamer picked up the occupants of the launch, and towed the damaged vessel to port.
