AUCKLAND'S RAINY DAY

SOME SURPRISE VICTORIES

(By -Telegraph.)

"(Special to the "Evening Post.!')

AUCKLAND, This Day

Steady uun tell all day and considerably upset the attendance, investments, and calculations for the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, several outsiders winning. The going was heavy, and there was a strong north-easterly wind. The totalisator investments wore only £16,442, £9167 less than on the corresponding day of last year. The track cut up badly, and there were a number of surprise wins. Wee Pat revelled in the heavy ground to outstay the field in the Trial Hurdles, scoring most convincingly. Curlaris came from a long way back to get second, with the favourite, Riotous, and Thespis tiring badly. Riotous will be improved by the race. GAY SHEILA'S GUINEAS. Gay Sheila waß never asked to gallop to win the Great Northern Guineas, and •her effort was a very pleasing one. Her rider held her hard all the way, being out with the pacemakers from the start. She drew dear' at the bottom of the .straight, and then 'won easily, stamping herself a smart filly. Sea Fox,' half-brother- to Seatown, was always prominent, and' held oft' Spiral's challenge well. Musquil and Spiral were running on strongly, with Tavern Knight nest, the latter being made a lot of use of. Another, very comfortable win was that of_ Puss Moth in, the Shorts Handicap, for which he was a warm favourite. lie began well, and was always in .the picture, and up the straight the" others had a hopeless task chasing him. 1/Allegro surprised by Brushing to cut Porotiti out of second place, with Exaggeration, Pomp, and Tradesman all handy. The last trio were not w.cll served at the start.. BAROSCOPE'S WIN. Ihe Mitchelson Cup rcsultcd'in the consistent Baroscope scoring his third win on end and giving a nice double-figure retuih. Carfex and Speedminl we're the leading pair all the way round to the home turn, where Baroscope had joined them with Prince "Val (on the rails) and View Halloo (wide out) handy. -Up to within fifty yards of the post Carfex held the advantage, but stopped badly, and .Baroscope finished strongly to beat View Halloo by a neck, a length clear of Speedmint and Carfex, who vrero on terms ahead of Prince Val, All Humbug, Red Sun, Royal Artist, and Desert Star. It was a fine race throughout. The winner did his job well, and View Halloo was a bit unlucky. Speedmint and Carfex were made too much use of, and it was only in the last few (strides that the latter collapsed badly. Prince Val was always handy, and All Humbug ran on better than was expected. Red Sun was closer at the finish than at any part of the race. King's Knave was always in the, ruck, and Allegretto got, into trouble early in' the. contest. SHOCK FOR BACKERS, There was a big shock for backers in the Welcome . Stakes, the hot favourite Whenuakura meeting with'his first defeat from another Chief Ruler youngster, Mother Superior. The, latter drew the rails, and aobn jumped out, with Gay Egypt. -Whenuakura missed the bounce out, but soon ran up and joined Mother Superior just before the home turn, where Gay Egypt 'and Sirona (wide out) 'Were within range. Mother Superior had Whcnuakura's measure half a furlong from home and beat* him by a head, with Gay Egypt two and a half lengths away, and j a gap back to Sirona and Royal Appellant. | The winner was being eased near the post I when Whenuakura made a last-minute [ effort, and was actually in front again. just past the post. ■ ' . ' I Mother Superior wad second • favourite, but paid close on double figures, so heavy, was the support for Whcnuakma. . ' STEEPLECHASE SURPRISE. Tlauwai sprang a surprise in the,Hunleris' Steeplechase. He went" vp1 to. "Valpcen, Count Leiidroft", aujl Zaue Grey on the hill the last1 "time' round1, and1 then beat them home, a bad jump putting 'Count LendrofT out of the running. Giant's Opal finished strongly in fourth place. Good Run, and Alpiuua opened up a gap crossing ."the top in -the Gordon Handicap, and they were clear at the home turn from Woodful, Supreme Ruler, Royal Gallant, Hushing, and Bugle Call, the last-named finishing fast to head off the two pacemakers, with Hushing fourth and Woodful, Supreme Ruler, Gay Broney, and Hawthorn following. The winner: paid nearly a score. ' There was a big surprise in the final event, the Flying Handicap,' Mungatoon winning and paying the best part of a quarter of a century.
