CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIPS

FIRST SERIES OF MATCHES OVER

A CENTURY TO ALLCOTT

Although some good individual performances were recorded, Allcott (Petone) leading the way with a century, the batting generally in the local senior cricket championship competition on Saturday afternoon slumped rather badly. The weather was ideal for cricket, and the stage seemed to be set for good scoring. However, the batsmen to exceed the 40 mark were few and far between. At the Basin Reserve a win over Wellington (last season's senior champions) was a most encouraging performance for Midland in setting out upon their jubilee season. On the day Tindill and Cleverley batted meritoriously, and Bryant and Baker were the principals in a string of bowlers to return good figures. Wellington's batting collapsed rather badly, in spite of the fact that a fine lead was given by Whyte. In the other, match at the Basin Reserve University failed with the bat against Institute, who showed all-round superiority. Kilbirnie, on their home: ground, fell cheaply to Wellington College Old Boys, though Crpok played his part splendidly with the ball. The Petone-Hutt match, at Petone, was confined to the one afternoon, and its main feature was,.an, attractively compiled century by Allcott. This match was drawn, but the others were won on the first innings by Midland, Institute Old Boys, and Wellington College Old Boys.
