MAN TO BE DEPORTED
STOWAWAY FROM SYDNEY:
An order for the 'deportation o£ Frederick Irvine, aged 32 years, a chemist, was made in the Magistrate's Court today when' he appeared on charges of stowing away on the Maunganui at Sydney and of being a prohibited immigrant. : Senior-Sergeant Dempeey said that the accused had Walked on board the Maunganui at Sydney, mingled with the passengers, and surrendered:himself only when the boat was too far out to turn back. He had no ticket . and he arrived here with only one penny in his possession. He had given a false name to the police, •but finger-print records disclosed the commission by him of a number of offences in Australia. He was discharged from Geelong Gaol on January 7 this year. Regarding the second charge, the Collector of Customs (Mr. A. Paul) said that the accused had no permit to land, and no permit would have been granted in view of his bad record. He had previously been convicted at Auckland of stowing away, and Mr. Paul asked that he be deported to Australia by Friday's boat. 'Irvine had nothing to say, and on-the charge of being n. prohibited immigrant he was. convicted, by Mr. W. F.- Stilwell, S.M., and ordered to be removed , from New Zealand on Friday's boat if possible. For stowing away he was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment;or deportation by the, first possible boat.
