LOCAL TOURNAMENTS
: The Wellington Chess Club's three gambit tourneys are proving averypopular attraction. The. competitor having the first move must oiler one of three gambits—Evans, King's, or Danish—which his- opponent must accept. 'The first month's play had indicated' a marked preference for the Evans Gambit, which was, perhaps, only to be expected. Mr. G. P. Anderson is leading in the A grade gambit tourney, with Messrs. A. W. Gyles, W. C. White, and if. It, Kelling sharing second place. Seven more rounds have to be played in this contest. Mr. J. L, Hardy-is leading in the B grade tourney, with 5 straight wins. He has yet to play Messrs. H. Askby and R. A. Godtschalk. In the C grade event Mr. H. IJ.1 J. Yarrell is leading. (4-0 and 3 to play),.-closely followed by Messrs. W. J. Cornish and R. A. Lucas. Mr. J. L. Hardy has a lead o£ half a point from Mr. C. R. McColl in tho struggle for the B grade championship o£ the club.
The annual tourney for the champion* ship of the Ngaio Chess Club is-rapidly apuroaehing completion. ■ The issue ia now narrowed down to Messrs. S. Faulknor and 13. E. Hicks, two former champions. The game between these players stands adjourned in a very even state. la the event of this game ending in a draw Mr. Faulknor would once more win the) title. Mr. H. Stringer has.won the junior championship of this club. The first prize in the handicap tourney of the Brooklyn Fire Brigade Chess Club has been won by Mr. W. R. Kitchirigmau, who has played very steadily right through the present season. The runner-up was Mr. W. C. White, the scratch player who represented the club bo creditably in tha Wellington Chess League's champidn-of-champions competition. .
Messrs. Ernest E. Hicks and Fl X, KelJing are leading jointly in the tourney for the chess championship of • tha Wellington W.M. Club and Literary Institute.. They each drew with Mr. •K. Beyer (who won the club's chess titla shortly atfei his arrival from Denmark), and have won the rest of their fixtures. They have to play each other in the two remaining rounds. Messrs. H;- M. Rosenberg 1.9-1) and K. Beyer (8-2) are leading in the club's handicap tourney in which two more rounds have to be played. Mr. J. Ottoway (5-0) had to retire from'thia contest owing to his removal'to Whit«» man's •:Valley. • - ••■•"
