IMPROVED OUTLOOK
MR. FO.RBES CONFIDENT
INTERVIEW AT LYTTELTON
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Quiet optimism regarding signs •of recovery was expressed by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes)' in an interview on his arrival at Lyttelton from Wellington this morning. '' The signs all round us are Very encouraging, and there seems to be a general improvement,'' he said. '' Our wool and meat prices are showing that, and are going to make the position better throughout New Zealand." Mr. Forbes said it was a far more hopeful outlook than there ha"s been for some time', and a good deal of work that, had been held up for the past two or three years was now being undertaken. People were more confident, and were prepared to tackle jobs which they had .left over. It was not possible to do anything along the line of taxation reduction this year, ho said. It was one of the things the Government was very anxious to do as soon as there was sufficient indication that it would be' justified in taking the step, but it had not yet reached that position. Referring to the taxation reductions in Australia, he remarked that it should not be overlooked that Australia felt the depression before Now Zealand, and had imposed very, heavy taxation at the time. Even with tho reductions made, the taxation in Australia was still Heavier than in this country.
