NOW WELL REVEALED

FORM OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS

THE AUCKLAND CLASSIC

With juvenile'form now so well winnoyred there is little room left for surprises in the near two-year-old races, and it looks extremely like the favourites, taking out in both the/ A.R.C.-and C/J.C. Welcome Stakes _at <■ Eljerslie and Eiccarton,' respectively .Best. Saturday. ;, , ■ The Eilevslie event.; ' wbuld , appear an almost foregone conclusion, for is not un-. beateii Whenuakura engaged? And then in the Eiccarton event is' Coronilla, a winner at her only start yet,"and,-a'filly who-,may well go the necessary one>better than her near relative Desert Gold did in-the southern Welcome. -: ;-. ,■ : VVHENUAKURA'S RIVALS. - 'In- the Auckland Welcome Whenuakura' stands right out, arid there is nothing more certain than that lie will.be backed down to very brief prices both, ways. : Were it not that Superior is in.the!race, with her connections itching for another tilt at the Chief Euler colt, the price on offer about Whenuakura would not be worth collecting. ■ ' '-,"'■ Superior is a speedy daughter of Colossus, and there were many who > declared that she should have beaten Whenuakura at Foxton at her last start. She won the Debutant at Wanganui with a great display of brilliance, and she showed the same brilliance at Foxton after .being slow to begin from an- outside marble, but, although she finally reduced a gap of half a.dozen lengths to half a length on the .winner, the latter was doing near his best only over the last hundred yards, when it became necessary' to ward off danger. Superior will need to behave very much better at the barrier on Saturday'to have oven the ghost of a chance with Whenuakura. .' '■.'■... THREE OTHER WINNERS. -.Other* winners engaged in the northern Welcome are Gay Egypt,; Sporting Blood, and; Mother Superior, and they- should assist in making some sort of a place dividend. ■■ " ■■■•:', V ■ V■' \ ■ Gay Egypt has had quly one start for a win, the success being an unexpected end-to-end affair over half a' mile at Paeroa last Thursday. He is a bay gelding by Gay. Shield from the Egypt mart Miss Egypt, and- he is > owned by his breeder* Mr. P. E. Brenan, of 'Paeroa. Miss Egypt was a usefM mare from Bobrilioff's full-sister Pourparler, among her successes being .the Great Northern Guineas, so that the breeding of Gay Egypt is replete with possibilities. '" Sporting Blood, after running third in the Avondale Stakes, won the Nursery Handicap on the second day of that meeting, but he was not ,good enough for the Trentham juvenile fields, though he went fair races to run fourth in>the Wellesley /Stakes and. then third in the Roseneath Handicap on the final day. He is a bay colt by Hunting Song from the Gazeley UnareGazi, and, carrying' the same colours as Hunting Cry, did, .he, may'later on be more than useful. •■;■' _, Mother Superior, .after running a fair initial race hi the Taita Handicap on the first day at Trentham, improved :at her second appearance to win the Eoscneath Handicap attractively from AVonderful 'and Sporting Blood- on the final day. She is a full-sister-to. Eaglet; and she promises to. dp useful service for her owner, Mr. E. Graced but her Trentham .win would not place her near on- the' same plane as Whenuakura. Still; with the improvement she made between her two first races, and with her'excellent breeding, she is a distinct place prospect on Saturday. MODERATE RACE FORM. There are eight other youngsters to oppose the five winners to date in the Welcome, and five of ,*them —Sporting Song, Gay Blonde, General Quex. Pound Sterling, and Day Wind—have already raced. The raced quintet has shown nothing to suggest its being'at all dangerous to Whenuakura. The others, of course, are next to unknown quantities. Sporting Sorig ran a poor second to Whenuakura in the Avondale Stakes, was beaten into third place by Sporting Blood and 'Gay Blonde in the handicap on the second day, and since has run second each day,-at Paeroa. He. is thus consistent ■enough, without having the', requisite ability *to win. He is a well-bred colt by Hunting Song from the Kilbroney mare Lionskin, a daughter of the brilliant Chokebore filly Counterfeit, so: that he is a full-brother to Hunting Lion and Jungle Song- and a half-brother to Patutahi, and lie should be successful in juvenile events later on.:. .Gay Blonde, the full-sister to Gay Sheik;1, has already run some promising races, but placed have been her best returns. She was' hardly seen at her best at Avondale, though she ran second on the final day, and" if she has fully recovered from her early season's travelling she may offer some real resistance for Whenuakura. General Quex, a half-brother by Lord Quex to Father's Voice and High Pitch, has 'shown no ability yet and he can hardly have come on. sufficiently, to be^of. any menace in Saturday's, field. His owneri' Mrs."VVl T>. Graham,' believes,' how- / ever, 'that; he/is the makings' of a.good colfe." and';'later on in 'thel season he may join the winning band. •„ , ■" . U • Pound Sterling had his first start at Paeroa on Saturday, and he ran third to. King Brierly and Sporting Song, with the margins only a head and half a head respectively. He is a half-brother by The Ace to Mosaic, Mosque, and. Gigantic, and his breeding offers plenty of promise. He is held ion lease from his breeder (Mr'; F. H. Bell) by Mr. X- W. Hastings,, ot Morrinsville. Day Wind's only start was at Paeroa last Thursday, when, outsider of the held, he ran unplaced. He is a chestnut colt by Whirlwind from the Merry. Moment mare Merry Day, an. excellent, performer herself, and he is held on , lease by:,his breeder, Mr. J. Irwin, who has. a lease over Merry Day and her .progeny: for breeding arid;racing purposes." ,- ,- The unraced /section comprises Koyal Appellant, Red Flame, and the Mazurka, colt Not much,is known about these, except that Eed Flame was doing good early work at Ellerslie and ran second to Sporting. Song in the parade at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting.' •''.'■..„ , rl • f Eed Flame, is a chestnut filly by, Chief Ruler "from the imported'Grosvenor^nare Very Hot, so that she-is a half-sister to Summertime and .Sir Nigel. She >vas; purchased at the January sales for 160 guineas on behalf of the trainer J. C. Lambessi Royal Appellants a bay colt by Appellant from the Lucullus mare Royal March Mam of Royal Potoa), and he is owned by Mr E K. Plaisted, of Wliangarei. Hie Mazurka colt, who is by Robespierre., is a half-brother to Patuki, .Bugle Note, Mount Shannon, Bolero, and Weatherstep, iind he is owned by Mr. W. Hoskmg, of . Waiuku, whp now has the clam.
