INSTITUTE AND UNIVERSITY
There, was little-sparkle iiy the play on! the No. 2'wickefc at the Basin Reserve between University and Institute,; the unpleasant conditions and the fact that the batsmen were inclined to pick their way warily mainly accounting for -an -,uninspiring display. After the captains; L. AT. Pacey (University) and M. Henderson (Institute) had tossed1, Duffy arid Hankins took strike for Institute about 3.30 p.m. to the bowling of Tricklebank, who had the assistance of the gusty northerly wind, and Dean. The bowling was steady, •though without a great deal of sting, but, was quite good enough to prevent the batsmen mastering it. Hankins failed to get past double figures and T. Tucker was quickly run out, but McLean pliiyed his part in a -useful partnership with Duffy, which added 40. After battiuy for just in two hours Duffy turned n hall from Dean to leg and Tnck.leban.Ji took a saiurt
ditch. The retiring batsman survived two fairly difficult chances, one curly in ■ his innings on the leg-side and the other on the oft', but for a first-oi-the-season knockit was a quite good effort. His total included eight 4's.' After Duffy's dismissal the fort was held by Culvert, who batted well after an uncertain start. He was missed in Uie slips off Trieklebunk before he had scored, and was thon nearly run out, being saved by the fact that Ulandford obscured the umpire's vision wheu he took the bails off. Catches in the slips off Tricklebank saw Herd and Tucker disposed of by successive balls, and just previously Dean had accounted for Duffy and Aldridge with the last ball of. one over and the first ball of the next. About 6.15 p.m. a misty shower of rain commenced to fall, and the light became very bad, so that it was only a question of finishing the over then in progress. Stevens's last delivery proved fatal to Cal-' vert, who had his middle stump knocked back, and stumps were drawn with the score reading 15S for nine wickets. Calvert was the only batsman to be clean bowled. The brunt of University's bowling was borne by the colts, Dean and Trioklebank, who sent down. 21 ami 13 overs respectively. Dean was particularly steady with his medium-paced left-arm deliveries, and he .bowled five maidens.- Trieklebauk also kept a good length and, with better fielding in the slips, would have been more successful. Blaudtord kept wickets very ably, and, in addition to taking two smart catches, allowed no byes, the extras representing three wides by Williams in'his one over, and two legbyes. Details:—. • .
