DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NAPIER, This Day. . A party of Parliamentarians visite.l Napier during tho weekend and inspected maiiy works in hand and others that aro proposed for the development of the district. They were much impressed not only with the restoration of tho city, but also with the prospects of future expansion, and made numerous expressions of encouragement. Those who paid tho visit were Messrs. D. S. Reid, H. Holland, W. A. Bodkin, D. McDougall, A. Harris, A. S. Richards, and H. G. R. Mason. During the morning they were conducted on a tour of the village settlement, the 490-acre block being used in. tho Greater Napier scheme, the 7500----acre small farm scheme, tho aerodrome, tie harbour works, and the river diversion.
These matters wero discussed at' a meeting held in the afternoon at which, the visitors were addressed by local body representatives. It was > pointed, out to tho visitors that the Government had invested £1,000,000 in Napior since the earthquake, and that the future prospects were bound up with expansion through development schemes, protection by tho river diversion, and increased trade through the improvement of harbour facilities.
The members of Parliament expressed themselves as quite satisfied with the requirements, and extended congratulations to tho district on its efforts t» effect complete recovery from the earthquake. Tho matter of rehabilitation was also brought before the notice .of tha visitors. It was pointed out that in tha recently issued Government book on, the disaster it was stated that £1,000,000 had been granted to the district for reconstruction. This was quit© wrong, as tho money was by way of loan, the total of money by grant being not more than £20,000. It was also pointed out that the public fully appreciated the generosity of New Zealand in subscribing £300,000 for relief. This matter was brought forward to correct misapprehension throughout the Dominion. The visitors promised sympathetia consideration for the proposals aB they) come beforo the House of Representatives.
