JOAN'S BRAVE DEED
.(Original.)' As Joan was 'walking along., tho street she saw a little child "playing with her ball on the path. Joan went on her way to do her shopping. She soon reached the shops, and walked busily about doing her shopping. After she had finished it, she started her journey, homewards. As she was walking home; she .saw"tho' child still playing with her ball. Sho threw it on the road and ran after it. As shc_ was about to turn and come back again, a car came speeding round a corner a little way off. Joan knew that the child could not reach the footpath in time. Sho threw down her basket-and ran. to the aid of the child,"and reached-her just. as.the car.:was about two of three yards away. Joan succeeded in pushing the child' to safety, but the car caught her leg, and she fell heavily to the. ground. She knew no more. ' -■ .When she came to herself again she found herself in the hospital with her mother and a, lady beside her bed. "I want to thank you for saving my-child from being run over," she said.. . Everything came back to Joan'then. Sho had saved a child, but the-car had run over her log and broken it. The lady took a parcel from her bag and handed it to Joan. x\s she opened it sho saw a lovely watch inside tho box. She could only stammer out the words, "Oh, thank1 you!": When Joan's leg mended.she often minded the wee girl, and loved taking her for walks; • ' ' • • '-; ■ ■ . ;.. ;. .. • IRIS.GORDON .(10).
