FEDERAL GRANT OF £3000

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received October 25, 11 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. Tho Primo Minister (Mr. J. A. Lyons) announced that the Federal Government had decided to niake a grant of £3000 to Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. An alternative suggestion to find a position for the aviator was considered by Cabinet, but it was found at the present stage of air. development in Australia that no service position suitable to a man of his qualifications war> available! Furthermore, the accept auce of a Government appointment would have prevented Sir Charles's in tended appearance as a tenderer for the air mail' contract. Smithy, interviewed in Melbourne, said: "This ts a wonderful gift and the most practical thing that could have been done for me at tho moment."
