STATE INTERFERENCE

OPPOSITION EXPRESSED

The annual meeting: of the Wellington Importers' Association was held in the Chamber of Commerce last night. The president (Mr. Sdwin Salmond) was in the chap. The report referred to the progress of the association, since the affiliation of the main centres' ..associations with the New Zealand Importers' Federation. The Wellington Association now had 97 members. Moving the adoption of the report, the president said that the New, Zealand Importers' Federation had now close on 300 members. Eeferring i to. hardships suffered by business people in the Dominion through Government interference, tiie president spoke strongly against planned economy, and said that in those countries where it was accepted individual effort and freedom, on which the JSmpire had been built, had practically ceased. Britain had continued to grow in power and wealth despite, and not bcaauso of, Government action. The adoption of the -report was seconded by Mr. A. L. Wall and carried. The following councillors were elected for the dnsiiing year, and they will elect their own president:—Messrs. R. G.'Buckleton, W. F. Cuthbertson, F. F. M. Ferguson, Hope B. Gibbon^ G. W. Guthrie, M. M. Heinemann, F. S. Hill, W. E. Jackson, A. D. Kerr, A. Marsdeh, C. W. Mack, H. C. Murray, John Myers, D. G. McCaul, C. S. McNulty, d J. B. Norwood, C. E. Bichardson, W. Simm, A. L. Wall, M. C. Walker, and K. S. Wilson. . •■ ' A special vote of thanks to the president for services rendered to the association was passed. The work of the secretary (Mr. T. Lisle), especially in securing members, was spoken of appreciatively.
