GAINE CARRINGTON'S WIN

Gaine Carrington's success in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday was the first for a New Zealand-bred horse in the race since Aborigine (by" Merriwee) ran a dead-heat for first place with Blue Book in 1909.. Gaine Carrington was taken from New Zealand to., Australia last year by his breeders, fhe brothers T. A., W. M., and I>. Smith, who raced him at the spring Meetings. After the Melbourne Cup Meeting, he was sold at a high figure, said to be approximately 2000 guineas, to Mr. J. A.-Phillips; a Victorian bookmaker, who also leased Peter Jackson, and gave the two horses to C. T. Godby to train. , Gaine Carrington as a two-year-old iu New Zealand had three wins, which included' tho Great Northern Foal Stakes. He won the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick, last spring and started favourite for both the A.J.C.. and Victoria Derbys. In the Eandwick race he was .unplaced, but he was runner-up at Flemingtou to Liberal. With 7st 6lb he finished seventh in the Melbourne Cup. He proved disappointing last seaso'n to his new owner, for whom he won only a single race, tb6 C. M. Lloyd Stakes, at FJemington, beating Kuvera. He is by Hunting Song from Left, by Martian from Lovelorn, by Melton from Hebrew Maid, by Orion from Jewish Maiden, T)y Sheen, so he is bred along solid lines for a mile and a half- journey et least.
