PRINCESS JULIANA

ENGAGEMENT RUMOURS

Princess Juliana, heiress to the Dutch throne, gave a denial on September 9 to a "Sunday Chronicle" correspondent-, through her chamberlain, Baron Dan'd, of the reports that she was shortly to announce her engagement. It had been rumoured in Amsterdam that her engagement, possibly to an Englishman, would be announced . next day.' When the correspondent telephoned Baron Dand declared there was not an atom of truth in tho rumour. . j Tho baron yioko from the royal palace, which overlooks the magnificent square, three times the size • of Piccadilly 'Circus, and is' constantly encircled by traffic. "It is false," he j said .when the questioner had made himself heard. "The princess is hore now and is much amused at the report." Tho correspondent asked if the baron had any idea as to how the rumour started. "None at all," he replied. "The princess passed her time lately quite as usual, and.l am informed that her Royal Highness is still heart-* whole." . . . ■ . The report originated- in a small Dutch' newspaper at Breda, and^ was subsequently published in a leading journal of The Hague, it being stated that the queen would broadcast the official announcement at 3, p.m. on September 9—the 35th anniversary of her accession to the throne. Then a comparatively small paper at Haarlem denied tho rumour, while the principal Dutch journals remained silent. It is pointed out that even if the Princess Juliana's engagement were to be announced it is hardly likely that tho queen would announce it in a radio address. The princess, who is twenty- , four, went to London for a week's visit 111 July, when she paid a private visit to her mother's cousin, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone.
