OLD LADY GOING HOME

When the Bemuera loaves Auckland tomorrow for London she will have among her passengers an old lady returning to her birthplace, Oldham, in Lancashire. This old lady has resided in New Zealand for many years, but rot sufficiently long to entitle her to an old-age pension under New Zealand law. She is, however, eligible to receive a pension at Home, and, realising -that destitution and a pauper's grave were all she could look forward to in New Zealand, she'approached various relief organisations with a view to securing assistance to enable her to return to "Owdham" where she has friends ■ and relatives. Her requests met only with sympathy until she called on the secretary of the Smith Family a fortnight ago. The Smith Family, having investigated her case, brought the matter before its members and gave publicity to her unfortunate plight.
