IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE

WAIRARAPA SHOW

FARMERS' BIG GATHERING

(Special to the "Evenino Post.") [ . CARTBRTON, This Day. Farmers from all par s of tho Wairarapa and adjoining districts aro concentrating in Carterton today fnr the fifty-seventh annual show of the Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society, which was opened in brilliant sunshine. Tho rising prices in farming, produce generally, coupled with record total entries, indicate that tho show will bo an outstanding success. The exceedingly cold snap at the weekend covered tbo Tararuas with snow, which provided a picturesque background for the busy scene on the showground. Tho entries in all classes total 3322, as compared with 2624 last year—a record for the show. The livestock entries total 1852, which is 285 (more than last year—also a-record. Substantial.increases aro shown in the sheep, children's, and dog sections. ,The following are the entries in the various classes, those o'f last year being shown in parentheses:—Competitions, 232 (208); horses, 193 (196); cattle, 331 (325); sheep, 531 (492); pigs, 87 (52); dogs, 464 (277); grain, cheese,, and butter, 73 (66); cooking, 330 (284) ; sewing and fancy work, 214 (220J; school classes, 853 (487); butter-fat competition, 14 (17)* The spring season in the Wairarapa has been a good one, although a trifle dry. Tho heavy rain on Sunday brightened the countryside, and the showgrounds aro now looking in perfect order. Judging of the cattle exhibits commenced, early this morning, and a start was made with the dog trials. Keen interest in tho judging is being taken by the farmers, aud it i considered that tho general quality of cattle and sheep is high. The side-shows have already started to attract the children, and it is'indicated that there will be a.very largo attendance on People's Day tomorrow.
