ACCIDENT IN ORONGORONGOS

While passing along a cliff face near Brown's Waterfall in the Orongorongos early yesterday afternoon, a trampe;*, Patrick Devon, aged 20, clutched at some scrub which gave way and ho fell about 50 feet, receiving a fractured1 skull and other head injuries fromwhich he died about 'two hours later. Mr. Devon was a nierabcr of v privato tramping party and at tlio time of th« accident was accompanied ouly by Mr. John Frew. The two men were trying"1 to negotiate a steep cliff near the waterfall, holds being precarious. Mr. Devon was leading, when suddenly the scrub on which ho was relying for support gavo way and he fell to a position near tlu» foot of tho waterfall. His companion arrived on the spot within three minutes and found the injured man unconscious," whereupon ho informed the other members of the party and wcut across country to Wainui-o-mata and tele% phoned for the Free Ambulance. When the ambulance arrived at about 3.45 p.m. Mr. Frew accompanied it to Mr.' E. L.' Biddiford's station, , towards which the rest of the party were bring-, ing the injured man from, where tho accident occurred, about teii miles-away,, Mr. Devon died on the way and his body,' was brought to tho city late last night. Tho deceased was a single man and a .plumber by occupation. He lived with his widowed mother at 32 Hapua^ Boad, Hataitai. <
