THE MEDDLESOME ELF

(Original.) Once upon a time there lived in Fairyland a very meddlesome little Elf, who couldn't keep his hands out of mischief. Well, one day he went to Fairiel and asked her if she would let him go down to earth. Fairiel, being a kind queen, said he could, so off he flew. When he got to earth, the first thing he did was to hide a collar-stud. Then he spent.the morning swinging on the cobweb swings. In the afternoon he flew into somebody's house. There he saw some yellow stuff like pollen bread. He licked it first, then grew bolder. On the butter he stepped, and there he stuck! Then along came a man with a knife. "What! Another fly?" And he pulled him off. Back he flew to Fairyland. This is how Fairiel punished him. He had to clean the Royal carriages for a week, which is the best way to punish naughty elves. ' ' "CLARIONETTE." (12). Petone.
