NO REDUCTION PROPOSED
The Government does not propose to) take steps to reduce the salaries ofl Judges. , ■ ::.
In. the House of'Bepresentatives'yes* terday, Mr. H. S. S. Kyle (Government/ Biecarton) asked the, Prime Ministeip whether the attention of the Govern* ment had . been drawn to legislation! passed by the British Government ml 1931 under the National Economy Act, whereby judicial emoluments, which! had remained stable for fifty-five years irrespective of market fluctuations mi; the cost of living, were reduced by one., fifth; and whether ' the Government I would bring down legislation affecting* Judges' salaries immediately. "The Government has considered thai provisions of the National Economy Act|-. 1931 (Imperial),'? said Mr. Forbes*: "The application of such legislation; to the salaries of Judges in New Zealand would be contrary to the Constitution Act, which provides that it shall not be lawful for the General Assembly? to make any diminution' in the salary] of any Judge, to take effect during th# continuance in office of any such Judge* It is not proposed to bring down legis/ lation this session as suggested."
