GOVERNMENT'S PLANS
Replying to a question by Mr. W. H. Field '(Government, Otaki) in the House of Kepresentativcs yesterday, the ■Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. Bitchener) said he would make an early statement' as to the Government's intentions in regard to the Western Hutt Road. , t . Mr. Field asked the Minister whether he would, now that all preliminary difficulties appear to have been overcome, hasten the long-deferred work of widening and improving the. Western Hutt Road, and its extension to join the main Wairarnpa Road near Silverstream, including another bridge over the Hutt River, to be constructed chiefly of material from tho abandoned bridge at Lower_ Hutt, and thus provide an alternative highway, safe from river erosion, between the city and the- Upper Hutt and Wairarapa districts. Mr. Bitchennr said that tho matter was at present under consideration by the Government, and he expected to be in a position to make a statement concerning the work :it an early date.
