V.M.C.A. CARNIVAL ENDS
As a grand finale to a coronation revue of . exceptional entertainment value, Miss Paddy" Hope Gibbons, the successful candidate in the recent V.M.C.A. carnival, was crowned at tho Concert Chamber last evening. The stage was banked with flowers, garlands of blossoms decking the coronation chair and hanging against tho black curtains. Tho stage carpet was strewn with petals. * ' A prologue by the "Queen's Champion" CMiss Gi'aeie. Kerr) and the '"Court Jester" (Mr. Ray Kemp) was cleverly' played. A spectacular item, , 'The Changing of the Guard" by girls of tho V.M.C.A. gymnasium, wearing flame tunics and gold head-dresses and carrying gold canes', was given,,also a ■ dainty ballet by the "flower maidens" (pupils of Mrs. Dorothy Parlett). Heralded by trumpeters, tho "queen--1 elect, ".the three "princesses," and their retinues made a picturesque procession as they passed up the centre aisle and took their positions,upon-,the stage midst loud applause. Tho "queen" and "princesses" wore white gowns and trains of rich velvet in •jewel shades. Miss Paddy Hope Gibbons's frock was ,of c white blistered crepe, embroidered with seed pearls, and her long ruby velvet train was edged with I ermine.' She carried a bouquet of red blossoms. Her four maids of honour and train-bearers woro picture frocks of white organdie with silver sashes. Miss Gwenda N train was of turquoise blue velvet and her maids were froeked in mist blue organdie, her satin-clad pages wearing the same shade.. \ . . Miss Joy Denby,'s train was of peach pink velvet, and her attendants wore peach arid pale green gowns. , Miss Dorothy Hay's colour scheme was amber, and her attendants wore- a paler shade of gold.. Each "princess" wore a headdress of blossom's to match her train. . The "queen" was crowned by Mr. R. H. Nimmo (president of the V.M.C.A.), with a beautiful floral crown and presented with a floral ~scepfcfe. After the ceremony the "queen of tho carnival" presented Mr. Nimmo with the result of tho campaign, a cheque for £659. - Mr. Nimmo, in a happy speech, paid a tribute to the esprit de corps and en.thusiasm of those who had worked to excood their objective of £.500 by £ 159. He mentioned particularly the work of the secretary (Mr. Len. Greenberg), and thanked all who had assisted with the carnival, and those who, with tho producer (Mr. Harison Cook), had made the coronation ceremony such a notable event. Those who took part in the excellent revue of sketches, songs, and ballets included members of the Wellington Theatrical and Operatic Society, Mr. J. F. Woodward and his orchestra, Mrs. R. Kemp, Misses Gretta Stark, Shona Bennetts, Winnie Cooley, Rene Cook, Scott, L. Kcttlewell, and Messrs. J. Cooke, D. Sta\rk, R. Kemp, D. Alexander, X., Matheson, B. Tilley,. and F. .Histed.
