HUTT PARK
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
The. quarterly meeting of the Hutt Park Committee was held.last evening. There were present Messrs. W. G. Meldnim (chairman), R. W. Toomath,- W. Wilson, and C. H.. Andrews. The thanks of. the committee were expressed to the Petone, Lower Hutt, and Eastbourne Borough Councils for contributions on a'pro rata population basis which enabled the: committee to pay current rates due. The thanks of the committee were also expressed to> the Hutt River- Board and the Lower Hutt Borough Council for agreeing to remit arrears of. rates. The Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Sub-As-sociation inquired if the committee had any:ground available for the laying down of courts,to serve as a lawi. tennis centre for the valley. Mr. Toomath said he toped the committee would give the request Geriousconsideration, as tennis was increasing in popularity, and it would be possible for .the -park to. become an important tennis centre. - The. park had been planned with, a view to the provision of courts in .the . nqrth-w.estern corner. Mr. Wilson agreed with the. views of Mr. Toomath, and said he would like to see an arrangement made whereby courts would be- planned to provide for tennis for thirty years ahead. ....... It was decided to ask-the association to confer with the executive of the committee as a preliminary to further negotiations. r ','..' A reply was received from the Wellington Trotting Club denying that the club had committed a breach of its lease by allowing an outside club to hold a trotting meeting on the park. The lease provides that for the first two trotting meetings held each year the club shall be charged £75 each, but that subsequent meetings shall be at the rate of £25. On September 16 the Hawke's Bay Club held ■ a meeting which was paid for at the rate of £25. The committee considered that .on outside- club should pay the larger rate; and that the Wellington Club had no right to allow the Hawke's Bay Club to have the meeting at the less rate. - In its reply the Wellington Club explained that the meeting was a. joint one, and that the control of the meeting was in the hands of the Wellington Club. . . , Members pointed out that no provision had been made for outside clubs. It was. decided to accept the lower fee on this occasion but to. confer with, the club regarding a policy, for future outside meetings. The executive ,was instructed to have two more hard tennis-courts laid down as early as possible. ■ At the request of the Automobile Club it was decided to obtain a price for lighting the Ttisiw: camping ground and to provide lightu^ i-oints for tho use of campers. The executive was requested to have the motor camping ground defined. The half-yearly statement showed that the period had commenced with a balance of ; £22 14s lid and had closed with a balance ,of £50 7s 6d. .The receipts had been • £435 16s 6d' and the expenditure £408 ,4s Id. • ■ The chief items in the receipts were fees from sports .bodies £207, contributions from :local bodies £134 6s, petrol pump Jease £21, tenni3 £16, and sundry users £13 12s 6d. The chief items of expenditure were: Kates £135 Is, provision for motor campers £44, additions to house £2S, and insurance £15 7s 6d.
