ANNUAL CONVENTION

RESOLUTIONS PASSED

Tlie annual convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union met at Brooklyn Methodist Schoolroom on Wednesday, when the district president, Miss C. E. Kirk, J.P., presided over a well-attended and representative gathering. Mrs. Brewer (president of Brooklyn Union) welcomed delegates in a speech full of encouragement. Miss Kirk led the devotional meeting in the morning, and Mrs. Goring in the afternoon —both sounding the same note of cheer and hope. The treasurer, Miss Mildenhall, presented the balance-sheet, which showed a credit of over £2. A considerable amount of corres-' pondeuce was dealt with, and resolutions were passed on the following subjects: Tiio nationality of New Zealand women marrying aliens; any attempt at enabling hotel bars to be kept open longer than was at present legal; any attempt at establishing a State lottery; regulation of drinking at public dances; and the admission of five-year-old children to the State schools. Arrangements were mado for the holding of a "Shop Day" in aid of district funds, especially in view of the jubilee convention in March, 1934, when Wellington district unions hope to have some 200 guests from all over New Zealand. Reports wore received from i eleven nearby unions, and a Verbal report was given by Mrs. Peryman of work among the four unions in the Wairarapa, with generous offers of help towards the "Shop Day" effort. The-re-ports gave an interesting account of varied activities, such as work in hos; pitals'and seamen's rest, work among the small children and the sick, collecting for V.M.C.A., Y.W.C.A., and Boys' Institute, knitting and sowing for the poor, appealing to the authorities against wrong-doing and for various reforms. Officers for. the year were reappointed as follows:—President, Miss C. K. Kiyk, J.P.; vice-president, Mrs. Lopdell; treasurer, Miss Mildenhall; recording secretary, Mrs. Tanner; "corresponding secretary, Mrs. Wood. Delegates to the National Council of Women- and Leaguo of Nations Union were appointed, and Mrs. Tanner was' appointed district delegate to the Dominion convention in March, 1934 Mrs. Peryman mentioned that Dominion officers hoped there might be a bazaar held in connection with the convention in 1934. Mrs. Peryman also received with thanks the gifts which unions had sent in for headquarters fund. These amounted to £12. •' A programme of" songs and recitations was much enjoyed, Mrs. Stimson reciting and Mesdames Soal and Udy aiid Miss Turner contributing songs. Mrs. Lopdell (Lower Hutt), vice-presi-dent, voiced the thanks of the visitors for the generous hospitality of the. Brooklyn Union. ' ~" A very interesting feature of the day was the visit of 'Mrs. ForresterPaton from Alloa, Scotland. She was a former president of the British Women's Temperance Association, and is keenly interested in temperance work here. She was received by Miss Kirk and presented with a beautiful bouquet o£ sweet peas, acknowledging the welcome in a gracious speech. Mrs? For-rester-Paton gave a short address, and conveyed greetings from the B.W.T.A. in Scotland. She spoke of the many difficulties confronting women in Britain, also of the educational work which was being carried .on. S.he closed with an urgent plea that the. women of the W.C.T.U, join with British, women in giving forth a. call for peace.
