TRAMS AND BUSES

DEBIT BALANCE GROWS

BURDEN OF EXCHANGE .

HALF YEAR'S FIGURES

Figures submitted by the general manager of the city tramways department, Mr. M. Cable, to the City Council last night showed that during the period April 1 to September 15 tramway and bus revenue fell further as compared with the revenue for the half-year period of'last financial year. At the same time working expenses wero substantially reduced, but the debit balance for the period still remained higher. It will be noted from the figures ■below that tramway capital charges have increased by £1692, notwithstanding that since March, 1932, the loan indebtedness of the department has been reduced from £539,734 to £393,776 (figures from the department's annual reports). It is understood that the increase of £1692, in spite of reduction of outstanding money, is almost wholly due to the effect of the high rate of exchange. But for that additional outgoing the department would have shown an improvement, instead of a move backwards, on the results of the first half-year of 1932.
