RAILWAY FARES
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l would like to know what justification there can be for the Railway Department denying to girls of twenty years attending classes for shorthand, type- j writing; etc., the right to- travel on apprentice rates. These rates arc available to young people in employment as. apprentices up to twenty-one years. Surely those under twenty-one years attending classes are entitled, to the same privileges. On applying, for a three months pass I am informed that the only rate available for me (20 years 2 months) is a Technical School ticket costing £1 17a (id, being. 7s 8d more than an apprentice ticket for the same period.—l am, etc., . '" «. SUBURBANITE. [The Railway Department states that owing -to the scale rate for-students being increased' at the age of twenty, whereas tho apprentice rate is discontinued nt twenty-one, the apprentice has a slight advantage as the minimum charge is applied to students. It is, however, to he noted that before twenty years of age arid after twenty-one years of age, the students have an advantage over those in employment for the particular milage quoted by the correspondent. The correspondent, it i« .pointed out, has been travelling for the same distance cheaper than those of the same age who are JU employment, and if ehe continues her studies after twenty-one years of age, will have a cheaper rate than the apprentices.]
