OBITUARY
MAURICE H. GOTLIEB
Advice lias reached Welligton of the death in New Yoik during August of Mr. Maurii'C JI. Gotlieb, father of Mr. Bernard Gotlieb, who up till recently was American Consul at Wellington and is now in the Consular service in Italy. Mr. .Maurice Gotlieb, who was a City Magistrate of New York,., died...at .his homo from a heart ailment after being ill for more than a year. He was 65 years old. During his service ou the Bench Magistrate Gotlieb earned a reputation for kiuilucsri towards many of the povertystricken defendants vcho constituted a majority of those who appeared before him, says the-"Xow York Times." In a largo number of cases he gave nioaey from his own pocket. Bom in.England, he was taken to New York at an early age by his parents, Henry and Rose Gotlieb. At 19 he enrolled in th» New York University Law School and completed the three-year course in half the time. His admission to the Bar took place in 1888 i He and another young lawyer, with a' joint capital of less than 20 dollars, opened an office Soon after the .World War Mr. Gotlieb was appointed Assistant Corpora-; tion Counsel. In 1923 and 1924 he was First Deputy Attorney-General of the State. He became a City Magistrate in 1926, after holding several temporary appointments as such. The term was to expire in 1932, but in 1930, when Magistrate Joseph E. Corrigan, now Judge of General Sessions, was made Chief Magistrate, Magistrate Gotlieb was appointed to fill his term, which would hriv-e expired in 1937. After the dopression set in Magistrate Gotlicb's financial generosity became widely 'known. Many pedlars and. vagrants who were defendants in his court had cause to thank him for his bounty.
Mrs. Gotlieb, the former Rebecca Wolf; a son, Jules, an illustrator, and a daughter, Miss Laura Gotlieb, were at the magistrate's bedside when ho died.
