LONG-DISTANCE RECORDS

AMERICAN'S ENDURANCE

"I have received some details of what must rank as the most amazing singlehanded drive in history, in which a large number of world's'and'class records went by the board,",says "Grand Vitesse" iii "The. Motor." _"The run was made under the observation of the American Automobile Association, tiie governing .body of motor racing in the. U.S.A. The car used was a special 12-cylinder Pierce-Arrbw two-seater, simply stripped of wings, hood and screen, ;and the driver was A. Jenkins. For 25 hours 24 minutes this superman stayed at the wheel, and in this time he.covered 3000 miles at tho wonderful average speed of 118 m.p.h.' The course used was a circular one onthe Great Salt Lake Desert, near. Salurdo, and >part of the time the driver had to .contend with a howling ga)e and torrential rain.

"Practically all records, from 200 miles Upwards were beaten. The 500-mile record was. raised from 119.24 m.p.h. to 124.94 m.p.h.; the; 1000-mile record from 116.36 ln.p.bi to 123.01 m.p.h.; the 2000-miles-from. 112.87 m.p.h. to 117.04 m.p.h.; the 12-hour record front 112.82 \m.p.h. to 120.50 m.p.h.,'and the 24-hour record from 113.50 m.p.h. to 117.80 m.p.h. All these are world's records;. Only six stops, each of approximately 2 minutes duration, were made for fuel, the car being fitted with very large tanks." ' '•■ \"'
