SMALL FARM SCHEME
DEVELOPMENT URGED
The failure of tho Government to develop the small farm scheme -was criticised by Mr. J. Connolly (Government, MidrCanterbury) in the Houso of last evening.' The Minister of Finance had the desire to help the people in tho towns and elsewhere to get on small holdings, he said, and an effort had been made to follow out that policy; but the effort, after all, was a very poor one. Tho ten-acre scheme was not sufficient to provide for.a .man, his wife, and children. In: Canterbury, the whole scheme was practically at an end. Mr. Connolly urged the Minister of Lands to make every effort ho possibly could to developthe .scheme. In the country districts men: were : working on relief schemes and were drawing between £80 and £100 a. year, and for half that amount they could be placed on a 20-acre block. Mr. F. Jones (Labour, Dunedin South): Where would they sell thoir produce? Mr. Connolly said he was not so much concerned about that. The men would be assisted out of their difficulties, and would be out in the green fields. I Mr. E. Semple (Labour, Wellington East): They could not live on sunshine. Mr. Connolly said that Ma advice to the Minister in charge of the scheme was to go on«developing the plan and buy good land so'that the people could get better conditions. They would be able to provide.-sufficient-for their own requirements even if they marketed nothing. Such a scheme would be easing the position of the Unemployment Board. Ho trusted that the scheme would be proceeded with vigorously. • • Mr. Connolly briefly referred to the exchange issue, remarking that there was no one'in the country today who could tell whether there was going to be gain or loss over the pegging of exchange. Ho expressed the wish that the exchange rate should be left to run its • full course for one year at least so that those who marketed their produce early would have the benefit of the exchange during tho latter part of the year.
