"Parliament, following the precedent of Canada and of certain Australian States, last session passed the Sales Tax Act," says the report of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. "This, it was urged, was dictated by the exigencies of the financial position. It is safe to say that no piece of legislation passed in recent years has irritated and perplexed the mercantile community more than this. It is intended to be of a more or less temporary nature, to tide over an admittedly difficult situation, and the business community will so soon as the finances of the country can allow be pleased to see the repeal pi' this unpopular measure."
