A. fire in dry underbrush which started late, on Tuesday in the hills above Hollywood trapped sonic 150 unemployed men, working on relief projects, in a circle of flames which .engulfed a small arua between a dam and canyons. Many were burned to death, and hardly ■ any of the survivors escaped without more or loss serious burns. Ambulances, fire brigades, aud about, 3500 recruits rushed to their aid and controlled the fire after it had devastated 1000 acres of uninhabited mountain land. "The apparent cause of the lire was the dropping of a lighted cigarette. Thirtysix bodies h&vc been recovered, .and at least twenty more are believed to be dead. A hundred are in hospital severely burned. The identity of the victims was mostly erased by the flames, which turned the box-like canypn into a tomb of cremation. They were taken to a temporary morgue. . Tho tragedy occurred at the eastern end of the low-lying Santa Monica Mountains, in the city area known as Griffith Park. . j A huge crowd of people gathered at the entrance to the park, while terrified mothers and children frantically sought husbands and fathers.
