LABOUR AMENDMENT

HEAVILY DEFEATED

The Government had thirteen voles to spare when a division was reached in the House of Representatives last evening on the amendment moved by lhc Government member for Wellington Suburbs (Mr. R. A. Wright) in favour of a free exchange, uncontrolled by the Government and without compensation to the banks. The 'Labour Party supported the amend|ment,..and, in addition to the mover Land the seconder, Mr. A. Harris ['(Government, Waitemala), votes against the Government's high exchange policy were recorded by Mr. H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson), Mr. D. McDougall (Government, Mataura), Captain H. M. Rushworth (Country Party, Bay of Islands), Mr. A. J. Stallworthy (Independent, Eden), Mr. W. A. Veitch (Government, Wanganui), and Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont). A vote was also taken last evening on tho question whether tho reasons advanced by the Labour Party for noconfidence in tho Government should remain on tho Order Paper. The Labour amendment was deleted by 46 votes to 27, the Labour Party being supported by the Independents and by Mr. McDougall, who lived up to the statement mad© on tho previous evening that he -would vote "against the G6vei\nment. As soon as tho result of the division was announced, Mr. P. Eraser (Labour, Wellington Central) moved a, further amendment, which is reported separately. VChe flrnfc vote taken was on the retention of Labour's original amendment. This resulted in the amendment being deleted by 46 votes to 27. The division list was as follows:— Ayes (27). • Atmore .
