DELAYED MAIL
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Mail notices in Friday's issue read as follows:— "Wanganella from Sydney is due in office, 8.30 a.m.," and as I was expecting an important letter whicli required answering by return, mail,. I called at the office o£ the'G.P.O. at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, thinking,-with an efficient j staff, that was a reasonable time to expect the mail to be> sorted. Upon inquiry for the expected letter (we had* impressed upon the sender to put Wellington, W. 2., as we reside in the Northland area), I was handed my correspondence, but the lo.ttei" urgently wanted - was not given to me, and I was respectfully told that all the letters had mt been sorted, but the office would be open to the public iintil 5 p.m. Having other matters to attend to, and with time spent travelling to and from home, I was prevented from calling at the\ office till 3.30 p.m. and was then handed the desired letter, toojate -to reply to by the outgoing mail. I feel that if the staff for sorting has been .retrenched beyond reason, why waste money in this new numbering scheme which appears not to have added to the systems efficiency ? The urgent letter was fully dressed, while the first parcel of letters delivered to me were^not. Another matter that requires attention and bringing up to date is the postal information in the two shilling book of stamps.—l am, etc., AVELLINGTON, W. 2. [The Department's, reply is as follows:— It was expected that the Wanganella would arrive in time for letters received by.her to be delivered by postmen. There was a slight delay, however, and the last portion of the letter mail was not received at the office until 9.5 a.m. In; addition to the Australian mail, the Wanganella carried a very large Eastern mail. An English mail by the Remuera was received by the "Limited" expreiis from Auckland, and the staff was fully taxed to cope with the largo amount of overseas mail matter received. The sorting of the postmen's "portion of the mail was finally completed about 12.45 p.m. The stamp booklets now being sold contain correct information.]
